Courses this term

Uses a standard unweighted 4.0 scale. Confirm your school’s rules for A+, repeats, pass/fail courses, and weighted classes.

How to use it

From syllabus to answer

  1. 1Add every graded course in the semester.
  2. 2Choose an expected letter grade and enter its credit hours.
  3. 3Use the live credit-weighted GPA as a planning estimate, then compare it with your school record.

Formula

How the math works

semester GPA = Σ(grade points × course credits) ÷ total credits

A four-credit course affects the result more than a one-credit course because its grade points are multiplied by more credits.

Worked example

Why credits change the average

An A in a four-credit course contributes 16 quality points, while a B in a three-credit course contributes 9. Together they create 25 quality points across 7 credits, or a 3.57 semester GPA.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as cumulative GPA?

No. This page estimates one semester. Use the Target GPA Calculator to combine an existing cumulative GPA with upcoming credits and plan a longer-term goal.

Does an A+ count as 4.0 or more?

Schools differ, so this calculator uses A as the top 4.0 value. If your institution awards extra points or weights honors courses, use its official calculator for the final figure.

Should pass/fail courses be included?

Usually only courses that generate quality points belong in a GPA calculation. Check your institution’s policy before including pass/fail, withdrawn, repeated, or transfer courses.
